3M 2080 Car Wraps in Miami & Fort Lauderdale
Most people asking for a 3M car wrap are really asking two questions at once: is 3M the right film for what I want, and will the shop install it the way 3M says to. The film is the easy part. 3M Wrap Film Series 2080 is a cast vinyl with a published spec sheet, a published warranty and published installation limits — all of it in writing, all of it checkable. What varies from shop to shop is whether anyone reads it.

That last detail is not marketing. 3M specifies an application temperature of 65°F to 75°F, and states that above 100°F the film loses its snap-up and reposition behavior even under light finger pressure. An open bay in Broward in August is past that number by mid-morning.

What 3M 2080 actually is
3M Wrap Film Series 2080 is a multi-layer cast vinyl, 3.5 mil thick without adhesive and 4.5 mil with it. Cast film is formed flat rather than stretched into shape, which is why it settles into a bumper radius or a mirror cap and stays there instead of creeping back over a Florida summer. 3M also states 2080 is more conformable than the older 1080 series and needs less heat to install.
Two 3M technologies do the work on install day. Controltac minimizes the adhesive's initial contact area so the film slides, tacks with a finger, snaps back up and repositions before it is committed. Comply builds air release channels into the adhesive so trapped air exits through the edge of the panel instead of sitting under it as a bubble.
The details that decide how the finished car looks:
- Gloss and high gloss 2080 colors carry a clear protective layer on the surface. It stays on through the entire install and must come off before post-heating — fewer squeegee marks, fewer install scratches.
- Rolls are 60 inches wide, so most panels on most vehicles get wrapped without a seam.
- 3M specifies dry application only. No wetting solution under the film, ever.
- The application window is 65°F to 75°F. Above 100°F, 3M says the snap-up and reposition feature is lost even if only light finger pressure was used. Our shop is climate-controlled end to end, which is the whole reason that number is not our problem.
- In service, 3M rates the film from -65°F to 225°F, and lists resistance to mild acids, mild alkalis, salt and occasional fuel spills.
126 3M 2080 colors, grouped by finish
Our 3M catalog carries 126 colors in the 2080 line. People choose finish first and color second, so that is how we lay them out:
- Gloss — 30 colors. G12 Gloss Black, G13 Gloss Hot Rod Red, G363 Gloss Dragon Fire Red, G337 Gloss Blue Fire, G356 Gloss Atomic Teal.
- High Gloss — 17 colors. HG12 High Gloss Black, HG61 High Gloss Nardo Gray, HG73 High Gloss Ruby Rosso, HG336 High Gloss Green Envy. 3M states its high gloss colors deliver 250% better reflected image quality than a typical premium cast wrap film.
- Satin — 15 colors. S12 Satin Black, S261 Satin Dark Gray, S347 Satin Perfect Blue, S271 Satin Thundercloud, S56 Satin Komodo Green.
- Matte — 13 colors. M12 Matte Black, M22 Matte Deep Black, DM12 Dead Matte Black, M26 Matte Military Green, M67 Matte Riviera Blue.
- Metallics — 26 across gloss, satin and matte. G212 Gloss Black Metallic, G217 Gloss Deep Blue Metallic, M211 Matte Charcoal Metallic, M229 Matte Copper Metallic, S344 Satin Canyon Copper, SP273 Satin Vampire Red.
- Color Flip — 15 colors. GP281 Gloss Flip Psychedelic, HGP258 High Gloss Flip Plum Explosion, SP276 Satin Flip Caribbean Shimmer, SP236 Satin Flip Volcanic Flare.
- Brushed — 4 colors. BR120 Brushed Aluminum, BR201 Brushed Steel, BR212 Brushed Black Metallic, BR230 Brushed Titanium.
- Carbon Fiber — 2 colors. CFS12 Carbon Fiber Black, CFS201 Carbon Fiber Anthracite.
- Shadow, textured and chrome. SB12 Shadow Black, SB26 Shadow Military Green, MX12 Matrix Black, and GC451 Gloss Silver Chrome, which 3M documents under its own separate bulletin and terms.
One warning worth hearing before you order. 3M notes that textured, metallic, pearl and color flip films have a directional characteristic — panels installed in alternating directions will not match, and 3M asks that the same film lot number be used across an entire vehicle for consistent color. Neither of those is a film problem. Both are shop-discipline problems, and both are invisible until the car is finished and parked in daylight.
When 3M is the right wrap — and when it is not
We install 3M, Avery Dennison, Inozetek, Hexis and Evolve. They are not interchangeable, and we would rather talk you out of the wrong one than sell you the wrong one.
3M 2080 is the right film when:
- You want a finish that reads factory rather than aftermarket — satin black, matte black, Nardo-style grays, a clean gloss color change.
- You want a documented manufacturer warranty on the film itself, with published terms you can read before you commit.
- You want a color you can re-order in three years to repair a panel, from the most widely stocked wrap line in the country.
- You are wrapping big flat panels — a truck bed, a van side, a Sprinter roof. 60-inch rolls mean fewer seams on large surfaces.
- You want brushed metal or carbon fiber accents. BR212 and CFS12 are the two most requested trim films we cut.
3M is not the right film when:
- You want the deep, wet, poured-candy look. That is Inozetek super gloss territory — 105 colors in our catalog against 126 in 3M, built around a different finish entirely.
- You want the widest possible palette. Avery Dennison SW900 runs 150 colors in our catalog.
- Your plan is to ceramic coat the wrap and still hold 3M's warranty. 3M excludes coatings and other aftermarket additions from the MCS warranty — details in the next section.
- You want printed graphics, a fade or a custom design. 2080 is a solid color and texture film. Printed work is a different 3M product line.
- You actually want protection, not a new color. Vinyl is 4.5 mil of decoration. Paint protection film is thicker urethane built to absorb rock strikes, and it starts at $899.
What the 3M warranty actually covers
3M publishes a vehicle owner warranty for applied 3M Wrap Film Series 2080, valid in the United States and Canada. Read it before you buy, not after:
- Term by zone. 3M's warranty card lists Zone 1 at 8 years vertical and 3 years horizontal, Zone 2 at 7 and 2, Zone 3 at 6 and 1. Vertical means doors and quarter panels; horizontal means hoods and roofs, which take the sun straight on. Which zone South Florida falls in is 3M's determination, not ours — ask us to confirm it in writing before the film is ordered.
- What it covers. Defects in materials and manufacture, including yellowing, bubbling or cracking.
- What it does not cover. Misuse, accident, misapplication, ordinary wear, dents caused by rocks or road debris, and paint pull during removal. It is provided only to the original consumer purchaser and is not transferable.
- Coatings are excluded. 3M's bulletin states plainly that coatings and other aftermarket additions — ceramic coatings named specifically — are excluded from the MCS warranty, and that 3M does not warrant 2080 films with coatings. A coating over a 3M wrap can still make it far easier to wash. It is a trade you should make knowingly, not one a shop should make for you quietly.
- Printed film is excluded. 3M does not warrant any printed 2080 application.
On removal, 3M states that 2080 films are removable throughout the warranty period provided the film has not been printed and no overlaminate was applied, using heat and/or chemicals, and that when the film is used, applied, maintained and removed according to 3M's instructions and within the warranty period it should not damage an OEM paint finish. That is 3M's language, and it is conditional on all four of those things — which is most of what you are paying an installer for.
A 3M wrap is only as good as the paint under it
3M is direct about this. All wrap films, 2080 included, should be applied to a like-new vehicle finish. Rust, bubbling, scratches, dents or other damage will be visible through the film, and 3M warns those imperfections may damage the film or cause it to fail early.
High gloss is the unforgiving one. 3M states that any paint defect — scratches, dents, bubbling, pitting, fisheyes, orange peel — may show through, and that high gloss magnifies it. Where heavy orange peel is present, 3M recommends professional paint correction before any 2080 film is installed. Skip it and the high gloss simply takes on the orange peel underneath.
Two more from 3M worth knowing if your car has history:
- Areas repaired with body filler must be sanded, epoxy primed and, for best results, finished with OEM paint or clear coat.
- Any recently applied paint must be fully cured to the paint manufacturer's directions before film goes over it.
This is why the inspection comes first and is free. We look at the paint with you, tell you whether correction is needed before the wrap and what it costs, and you decide. Nobody at this shop benefits from wrapping over a problem — we are the ones who have to hand the car back.
3M truck wraps and fleet vehicles
3M lists commercial vehicle and fleet graphics, emblems and striping among the recommended end uses for 2080, and 60-inch rolls suit truck flanks, van sides and box panels better than narrower film. A blacked-out work truck, a satin fleet color, a chrome delete across a crew cab — all straightforward 2080 work.
The distinction that trips people up: a solid color truck wrap and a printed logo wrap are different products. 3M states printing on 2080 is strictly user test-and-approve, that any printed 2080 must be covered with an overlaminate, and that 3M does not warrant printed 2080 applications. Printed fleet graphics belong on 3M's print wrap film line instead. If your truck needs both a color and artwork, we plan them as two materials on one vehicle rather than pretending one film does both.
Trucks and SUVs also take the most disassembly — bed rails, running boards, flares, badges, handles. That is hours, and it is the main reason a truck quote lands above a sedan quote in the same film.
Living with a 3M car wrap in Florida
3M publishes its own care instructions for 2080, and they are short enough that there is no excuse for not following them:
- Do not wash the wrap for at least 72 hours after installation.
- Hand wash whenever possible. If the car must go through a machine, choose touchless — 3M warns that brush washes may dull and scratch the film and lift the edges of the graphics.
- Wipe fuel spills off immediately, then hand wash and dry as soon as possible.
- Store the car indoors, shaded or covered when you can. In Broward that single habit does more for the finish than any product.
- Fingerprints on matte finishes come off with a clean lint-free towel and a mix of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% water.
- Most mild surface scratches disappear in sunlight on a warm day, or can be worked out with a heat gun by a professional. Deeper scratches mean replacing the panel.
Color change wraps start at $3,000, and the final number depends on the film and finish you choose, how much of the vehicle comes apart and the condition of the paint underneath. Chrome deletes, roof wraps and accent work are priced separately and cost far less than a full car. Paint protection film starts at $899. Coverage level — partial front, full front, track or full body — is quoted per vehicle after the free inspection.

What is the difference between 3M 2080 and the older 3M 1080?
3M states that 2080 is more conformable than the previous 1080 series and requires less heat during installation. 2080 also added high gloss colors, and its gloss and high gloss films carry a clear protective layer on the surface that stays on through the install and is removed before post-heating, which reduces surface impressions and install scratches. If a shop is still quoting you 1080, ask why.
Does 3M still warranty my wrap if I ceramic coat it?
No. 3M's product bulletin states that coatings and other aftermarket additions — ceramic coatings specifically named — are excluded from the 3M MCS Warranty, and that 3M does not warrant 2080 films with coatings. A coating over a wrap genuinely does make washing easier, which matters most on satin and matte. It is a real trade-off and you should make it with the facts in front of you. Can 3M 2080 go over a repainted panel?
Only if the repair was done properly and the paint has fully cured. 3M requires that areas repaired with body filler be sanded, epoxy primed and ideally finished with OEM paint or clear coat, and that any recently applied finish be fully cured per the paint manufacturer's directions before film is applied. Film over uncured or poorly prepped paint is how wraps fail early. We check this at the free inspection.
How soon can I wash a new 3M wrap, and can I take it through a car wash?
3M says do not wash the wrap for at least 72 hours after installation. After that, hand washing is best. If you must use a machine, use touchless only — 3M warns that brush washes may dull and scratch the film and lift the edges of the graphics. If you use a pressure washer, keep it gentle and off the edges.
Is 3M's high gloss worth it over standard gloss?
It depends entirely on your paint. 3M states its high gloss colors deliver 250% better reflected image quality than a typical premium cast wrap film, which is the mirror-like look people are after. The same property magnifies whatever is underneath — 3M specifically warns that high gloss exaggerates orange peel and recommends professional paint correction first where heavy orange peel is present.
