Most people asking for a 3M car wrap are really asking two questions at once: is 3M the right film for what I want, and will the shop install it the way 3M says to. The film is the easy part. 3M Wrap Film Series 2080 is a cast vinyl with a published spec sheet, a published warranty and published installation limits — all of it in writing, all of it checkable. What varies from shop to shop is whether anyone reads it.
We stock 126 colors of 3M 2080 in Davie, from G12 Gloss Black to SP276 Satin Flip Caribbean Shimmer, and we install it panel by panel with the trim off, in a climate-controlled bay. That last detail is not marketing. 3M specifies an application temperature of 65°F to 75°F, and states that above 100°F the film loses its snap-up and reposition behavior even under light finger pressure. An open bay in Broward in August is past that number by mid-morning.

3M Wrap Film Series 2080 is a multi-layer cast vinyl, 3.5 mil thick without adhesive and 4.5 mil with it. Cast film is formed flat rather than stretched into shape, which is why it settles into a bumper radius or a mirror cap and stays there instead of creeping back over a Florida summer. 3M also states 2080 is more conformable than the older 1080 series and needs less heat to install.
Two 3M technologies do the work on install day. Controltac minimizes the adhesive's initial contact area so the film slides, tacks with a finger, snaps back up and repositions before it is committed. Comply builds air release channels into the adhesive so trapped air exits through the edge of the panel instead of sitting under it as a bubble.

One warning worth hearing before you order. 3M notes that textured, metallic, pearl and color flip films have a directional characteristic — panels installed in alternating directions will not match, and 3M asks that the same film lot number be used across an entire vehicle for consistent color. Neither of those is a film problem. Both are shop-discipline problems, and both are invisible until the car is finished and parked in daylight.
We install 3M, Avery Dennison, Inozetek, Hexis and Evolve. They are not interchangeable, and we would rather talk you out of the wrong one than sell you the wrong one.

3M publishes a vehicle owner warranty for applied 3M Wrap Film Series 2080, valid in the United States and Canada. Read it before you buy, not after:
On removal, 3M states that 2080 films are removable throughout the warranty period provided the film has not been printed and no overlaminate was applied, using heat and/or chemicals, and that when the film is used, applied, maintained and removed according to 3M's instructions and within the warranty period it should not damage an OEM paint finish. That is 3M's language, and it is conditional on all four of those things — which is most of what you are paying an installer for.
3M is direct about this. All wrap films, 2080 included, should be applied to a like-new vehicle finish. Rust, bubbling, scratches, dents or other damage will be visible through the film, and 3M warns those imperfections may damage the film or cause it to fail early.
High gloss is the unforgiving one. 3M states that any paint defect — scratches, dents, bubbling, pitting, fisheyes, orange peel — may show through, and that high gloss magnifies it. Where heavy orange peel is present, 3M recommends professional paint correction before any 2080 film is installed. Skip it and the high gloss simply takes on the orange peel underneath.

This is why the inspection comes first and is free. We look at the paint with you, tell you whether correction is needed before the wrap and what it costs, and you decide. Nobody at this shop benefits from wrapping over a problem — we are the ones who have to hand the car back.
3M lists commercial vehicle and fleet graphics, emblems and striping among the recommended end uses for 2080, and 60-inch rolls suit truck flanks, van sides and box panels better than narrower film. A blacked-out work truck, a satin fleet color, a chrome delete across a crew cab — all straightforward 2080 work.
The distinction that trips people up: a solid color truck wrap and a printed logo wrap are different products. 3M states printing on 2080 is strictly user test-and-approve, that any printed 2080 must be covered with an overlaminate, and that 3M does not warrant printed 2080 applications. Printed fleet graphics belong on 3M's print wrap film line instead. If your truck needs both a color and artwork, we plan them as two materials on one vehicle rather than pretending one film does both.
Trucks and SUVs also take the most disassembly — bed rails, running boards, flares, badges, handles. That is hours, and it is the main reason a truck quote lands above a sedan quote in the same film.
3M publishes its own care instructions for 2080, and they are short enough that there is no excuse for not following them:
Color change wraps start at $3,000, and the final number depends on the film and finish you choose, how much of the vehicle comes apart and the condition of the paint underneath. Chrome deletes, roof wraps and accent work are priced separately and cost far less than a full car. Paint protection film starts at $899. Coverage level — partial front, full front, track or full body — is quoted per vehicle after the free inspection.

3M states that 2080 is more conformable than the previous 1080 series and requires less heat during installation. 2080 also added high gloss colors, and its gloss and high gloss films carry a clear protective layer on the surface that stays on through the install and is removed before post-heating, which reduces surface impressions and install scratches. If a shop is still quoting you 1080, ask why.
No. 3M's product bulletin states that coatings and other aftermarket additions — ceramic coatings specifically named — are excluded from the 3M MCS Warranty, and that 3M does not warrant 2080 films with coatings. A coating over a wrap genuinely does make washing easier, which matters most on satin and matte. It is a real trade-off and you should make it with the facts in front of you. We will tell you before you decide, not after.
Only if the repair was done properly and the paint has fully cured. 3M requires that areas repaired with body filler be sanded, epoxy primed and ideally finished with OEM paint or clear coat, and that any recently applied finish be fully cured per the paint manufacturer's directions before film is applied. Film over uncured or poorly prepped paint is how wraps fail early. We check this at the free inspection.
3M says do not wash the wrap for at least 72 hours after installation. After that, hand washing is best. If you must use a machine, use touchless only — 3M warns that brush washes may dull and scratch the film and lift the edges of the graphics. If you use a pressure washer, keep it gentle and off the edges.
It depends entirely on your paint. 3M states its high gloss colors deliver 250% better reflected image quality than a typical premium cast wrap film, which is the mirror-like look people are after. The same property magnifies whatever is underneath — 3M specifically warns that high gloss exaggerates orange peel and recommends professional paint correction first where heavy orange peel is present. On a clean factory finish it is stunning. On a tired one it is a magnifying glass.
