How do you fix cloudy headlights permanently?

Restore the lens, then cover it with clear paint protection film. Sanding and polishing clear the haze; the film replaces the UV protection that sanding removed and takes the pitting from then on. Without the film, the cloud comes back.

Why the kits are temporary

Every restoration kit sands off the hazed layer and the factory UV coating with it. The wipe-on clear in the kit is not a UV coating that lasts. In Florida sun the lens hazes again, often faster than the first time.

The permanent version

  1. Wet sand and polish the lens until it is optically clear.
  2. Apply a durable clear to seal the plastic.
  3. Install clear paint protection film over the lens. It blocks UV, takes the sand, and self-heals light scratches.

On a new car

Skip steps one and two. Film the lenses while they are new. Headlights are part of every PPF package from Partial Front at $899, with the front bumper that takes the same hits.

What is not fixable

Cracks, moisture inside the housing, and pitting deep enough to distort the beam. Those are a new assembly, and then film on the new one.

Related questions, answered.

Is restoring your headlights worth it?
Yes, if you protect them afterward. Restoration alone buys a season or two, because the factory UV coating is gone once the lens is sanded. Restoration followed by clear paint protection film on the lens is the version that lasts. Full answer →
Why is detailing so expensive?
Because it is hours of skilled labor, not a car wash. A proper detail decontaminates the paint, cleans every surface inside, and protects what it cleaned. A $30 wash takes ten minutes; a detail takes most of a day. Full answer →
How long does a full detail usually take?
Half a day to a full day. Exterior decontamination and a safe wash are two to three hours; a thorough interior is two to four; protection adds an hour and cure time. A detail that takes an hour is a wash with dressing. Full answer →
How much does it cost to repair a headlight?
Restoring a hazed lens is a few hundred dollars and lasts a season or two; replacing a modern LED headlight assembly runs from several hundred to a few thousand. The cheapest headlight repair is the one you never need: clear film on the lens before it pits. Full answer →
