Is restoring your headlights worth it?

Yes, if you protect them afterward. Restoration alone buys a season or two, because the factory UV coating is gone once the lens is sanded. Restoration followed by clear paint protection film on the lens is the version that lasts.

Why lenses haze

Headlights are polycarbonate with a thin factory UV coating. Sand pits the surface, UV degrades the coating, and the plastic yellows and clouds. Light output drops; night driving gets worse; the car looks old from thirty feet.

What restoration does

Wet sanding removes the damaged layer, polishing brings back clarity, and a new clear is applied. The lens looks new. The new clear is not as durable as the factory one, so in Florida sun the haze returns in a year or two.

What makes it last

Clear paint protection film on the restored lens. It takes the pitting, blocks the UV, and self-heals light scratches. Headlights are included in every PPF package from Partial Front at $899; on a car with hazed lenses, restore first, then film.

New cars

Skip the restoration entirely by filming the lenses now. A new lens under film stays a new lens.

How much is a typical detail?
A typical full detail from a proper shop is a few hundred dollars, by vehicle size. Ours start at $300 and include decontamination, a safe wash, the interior and a protection step. Quick washes with dressing are cheaper and are not details. Full answer →
How do you fix cloudy headlights permanently?
Restore the lens, then cover it with clear paint protection film. Sanding and polishing clear the haze; the film replaces the UV protection that sanding removed and takes the pitting from then on. Without the film, the cloud comes back. Full answer →
Why is detailing so expensive?
Because it is hours of skilled labor, not a car wash. A proper detail decontaminates the paint, cleans every surface inside, and protects what it cleaned. A $30 wash takes ten minutes; a detail takes most of a day. Full answer →
How long does a full detail usually take?
Half a day to a full day. Exterior decontamination and a safe wash are two to three hours; a thorough interior is two to four; protection adds an hour and cure time. A detail that takes an hour is a wash with dressing. Full answer →
