What a swirl is
A fine scratch in the clear coat, thousands of them, in the circular pattern a brush or a dirty mitt leaves. They show as a spiderweb under sun or a light. Removing them means removing clear coat down to the bottom of the scratch so the surface is flat again.
How it is done
- Decontaminate: wash, iron remover, clay. Polishing over grit makes more swirls.
- Measure paint depth so you know how much clear coat you can remove.
- Machine polisher, cutting pad, compound. Slow overlapping passes until the swirls are gone under a light.
- Finishing pad and polish to bring back gloss.
- Panel wipe, then protection so it does not come back.
By hand
A hand "swirl remover" is a glaze with fillers. It hides the swirls until the next wash and does nothing permanent. Fine for a photo, not a fix.
Keeping them gone
