Can I DIY a ceramic coating?

You can — but doing it right takes four crucial steps: decontaminate the paint, correct it, apply the coating, then level it after it flashes. You'll need an applicator sponge, at least two microfiber towels, and a clean, controlled environment. The key is an even coat with no streaks or high spots, worked in small sections. The biggest factor is prep: if you don't properly decontaminate and paint-correct first, the coating won't look right or perform as intended — which is exactly why most owners choose a professional install.

Yes, and here is what usually goes wrong

What the pro job is actually buying

Not the bottle. The two days of decontamination and paint correction before it, the lights that show what a driveway hides, the bay, and the warranty. On a new car with minimal defects, a consumer coating applied carefully will bead water for a year. On anything with swirls, it locks the swirls in.

If you are going to DIY anyway

The middle path

Have the paint corrected professionally, then keep it up yourself. Or have us coat it once with a multi-year Ceramic Pro package and do the maintenance washes at home. Either way the correction is where the money is best spent.

Is it worth getting ceramic coating from a dealership?
Rarely. Dealer coatings are usually applied fast in a service lane, without paint correction, and sold in the finance office at a specialist price. The same money at a Ceramic Pro Elite Dealer buys corrected paint, a controlled bay and a manufacturer warranty. Full answer →
